To further ensure the safety and comfort of The University Library clients, a process which began in 1999, the university implemented a controlled access system for entrance to both Library North and Library South. The new system is also intended to protect the Library's collections and equipment.
Turnstiles, similar to those that control access to the new GSU Student Recreation Center, are installed at Library entrances to allow for quick and convenient access by GSU-affiliated students, faculty, and staff with a valid PantherCard. Scholars, guests, and other visitors with a need to use the The University Library collections and services are required to register with a security guard, posted at each entrance, to gain admittance. These guests are required to present some form of acceptable photo ID at the security guard station upon entering the Library. Guests ID's may be held at the security station while they are in the Library.
In addition to the security guards at each entrance, the campus police continue the current policy of patrolling all floors of both buildings. Also, emergency telephones with direct dial to campus police remain in current locations on each floor throughout the Library. GSU, The University Library, and campus police are hopeful that these security measures will significantly address some concerns expressed by clients and establish a more secure and comfortable environment. Controlled access to the Library entrances enable the university library to continue focusing its collections and services on the information needs of our university clients without denying access to students and faculty of other universities, researchers, scholars, legislators, and the business community members who find value in our extensive collections and services for their research.
