All books are in their permanent locations, and we now have plenty of room to grow. Range finders are in progress.
The final phase of the project, returning the pre-1975 bound periodicals to onsite storage, will commence in late February, and be complete by the end of March.
We are in the process of moving the General Collection books back into a logical sequence. Book moving is going on in multiple locations. Please see our Floor Maps page for the current locations of library materials.

On November 15, 2007 over 200 people helped us celebrate the completion of the Transformation. We appreciate everyone making the effort to attend, especially Holder Construction Company for donating $20,000 towards the project. View photos from the event.
The library General Collection is going to be moved into its long-term location sometime towards the end of this year.
We have contracted with a company that specializes in rationalizing library collection layout. They will be looking at the size and growth rates of the various call number areas, as well as the type of books in each call number. They will produce a new layout that will allow for at least 10 years of growth room.
Once we have the layout, we will be moving all of the books into their new, permanent locations, most likely over the winter break.
Beginning on Monday, August 27, 2007, the main entrance area of Library North will close. The Library North building will remain open as only the entrance itself will be closed. All services and resources currently housed on the first floor will remain available on this floor. Patrons and visitors are asked to use the Library South entrance exclusively to gain access to the library. Access to Library North is available by crossing the links on the second and third floors.
The purpose of this entrance closure is to replace the current glass entrance area on the first and second floors of Library North.
This entrance will re-open in the middle of October.
The links between floors 2 and 3 of Library North and Library South opened Monday August 20, 2007. View our Flickr site for photos of the links.
The new links provide:
Now on Library North 3: General Collection HA30 - KDK
These books were previously on Library North 5, with the exception of HA30-end HA, which were on LN4.
Now on Library North 5: General Collection A - HA29
These books were previously on Library North 4.
Library North 3 is now open, featuring ample new lounge, table, and carrel seating, as well as new group study rooms. General Collection books HA30 - KDK are also now on LN3.
Bound periodicals on LN3 remain inaccessible. We expect to be able to resume staff retrievals of bound periodicals from LN3 in mid-June, and for the area to reopen to the public around the beginning of July.
Library North 4 and 5 will be partitioned in the next few days and construction will begin on the east side of those floors. The compact shelving on the west side of the floors, containing General Collection books, will be open during most of the construction.
In a few weeks the new window on Library North 1 will open, offering a "Grand Vista" onto Decatur Street!
Starting on Tuesday, May 29, the General Collection on Library North 4 containing call numbers A - HA will be shifted into the new compact shelving on Library North 5. Once books are on Library North 5, they will need to be retrieved by library staff until the Fire Marshall issues a Certificate of Occupancy (CO) for that area. The area cannot be made accessible to patrons before the CO is issued, which we expect to be by mid-June.
Starting on Monday, June 11, the General Collection on Library North 5 containing call numbers HB - KE will be shifted into the new shelving on Library North 3. While this collection is being shifted, books will need to be retrieved by library staff. The collection will be accessible to patrons once the collection move to LN 3 is complete, which we expect to be around June 19.
Book retrieval requests during this time can be placed at the circulation desk on Library North 1 or Library South 2, or using the online form at www.library.gsu.edu/forms/retrieval.asp
Bound periodicals currently located on the 3rd floor of Library North (non-Q call numbers) will be inaccessible from approximately May 8 - June 14, 2007. During this time, Georgia State University students, faculty and staff who need articles from these volumes can request them from Interlibrary Loan through ILLIAD.
To log into ILLIAD and request an article, go t
http://illiad.gsu.edu/illiad/GSU/logon.html
Interlibrary Loan will make every effort to expedite these requests, and in the majority of cases, requested articles will be available in 24-48 hours.
From approximately June 15 - July 9, 2007, library staff once again will be able to retrieve bound periodicals from Library North 3 (non-Q call numbers). During this time, patrons should use our Periodical Retrieval Form to request articles from this collection. Patrons will be able to pick up requested items on Library North 2 at the Research Support desk. More information about pick-up locations and retrieval times are found on the form.
For assistance with requests you can contact a subject librarian (liaison) at http://www.library.gsu.edu/liaisons or obtain help at the Research Support Desk (Library North 2) or by phone, e-mail, chat and IM.
Thank you for your understanding and patience as we continue to improve the University Library.
