"Cited by" in PubMed

"Cited by" feature (i.e., Articles Citing This Article) for PubMed can be downloaded onto the FireFox browser.

"This script takes each result in a PubMed search and then queries Google Scholar to get the number of times it has been cited. Then it places a link with this info next to each search result, linking to the citations in Google Scholar."

New Database in PubMed

From the press release:

"The National Library of Medicine (NLM), part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), announces the introduction of dbGaP, a new database designed to archive and distribute data from genome wide association (GWA) studies. GWA studies explore the association between specific genes (genotype information) and observable traits, such as blood pressure and weight, or the presence or absence of a disease or condition (phenotype information). Connecting phenotype and genotype data provides information about the genes that may be involved in a disease process or condition, which can be critical for better understanding the disease and for developing new diagnostic methods and treatments....the initial release of dbGaP contains data on two studies: the Age-Related Eye Diseases Study (AREDS), a 600-subject, multicenter, case-controlled, prospective study of the clinical course of age-related macular degeneration and age-related cataracts that was supported by the National Eye Institute (www.nei.nih.gov); and the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (www.ninds.nih.gov) Parkinsonism Study, a case-controlled study that gathered DNA, cell line samples and detailed phenotypic data on 2,573 subjects. NEI and NINDS worked closely with NCBI in placing data from the two studies in dbGaP."

Interactive PhysProp Database

SRC PhysProp Database (i.e., SRC = Syracuse Research Corporation):

http://www.syrres.com/esc/physdemo.htm

This online interactive demo retrieves data from the  PhysProp database of 25,000 compounds.  Upon entering the CAS number, the actual values are fished out.  IF you click on the “Datalog Database” link, you can do searches for name and formula from which citation to property data on  values such as dissociation constant, vapor pressure, solubility UV, etc., can be attained.

Added Note:
ChemIDplus database uses this databse to extract their information.

NEW: Chemistry Central

http://www.chemistrycentral.com/

A new open access (OA) website for chemists. Chemistry Central brings peer-reviewed research in chemistry from a range of OA
journals.  Chemistry Central's portfolio of journals includes  titles such as the Chemistry Central Journal alongside specialist journals (e.g. Beilstein Journal of Organic Chemistry, Geochemical Transactions) that focus on particular disciplines. It has been developed by the same team that created biomedical OA publisher BioMed Central. Clicking on 'provisional PDF' gives the full text in PDF. Articles which are highly accessed are indicated next to the title.

Access to other OA chemistry resoures from chemistry central is also possible:

The Chemistry Central website currently features chemistry-related articles published in BioMed Central journals (i.e., another very good peer-reviewed OA site for the biology and medical research community). Chemistry Central can be accessed from the chemistry research guide under databases.

142,000 NMR
28,000 IR
19,000 MS

To View a Spectrum:
Do a substance search and click on the microscope icon,
There, click on the link "Experimental Properties" to get into the spectra data. Other physical data such as melting point, boiling point, etc., can also be found with relevant references.

New in Web of Science

Just a reminder of the following latest features in Web of Science:

Interface can now automatically search other databases e.g., Pubmed, Agricola, alongside Web of Knowledge results. Once you do a General Search, a link at the top of the search appears-called "View additional results,"  which upon clicking gives two files.

1.  ISI Web of Knowledge Results
2.  External Collection Results

The 'ISI Web of Knowledge Results' gives results from Current Contents Connect and Biological Abstracts.
The 'External Collection Results' gives the number of hits from other databases (vide infra).  When you click on this link, wait a few seconds! The number of results from each database will then appear.  You may then click on the results to view them.  NOTE, the time span for searching these databases is latest 5 years.

External Collections Results = Agricola; AIAA Meeting Papers American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics; All arXiv ePrint Archives; arXiv Computer Science; arXiv Mathematics; arXiv Nonlinear Sciences; arXiv Physics; arXiv Quantitative Biology; Civil Engineering Database; Education Resources Information Center; NASA Astrophysics Data System; NTIS Library Documents published since 1990; Popline Reproductive Health Literature; PubMed.

Note: OTHER RESOURCES are also available from the Web of Knowledge platform.  Among others, these include, BiologyBrowser, Index to Organism Names, Science Watch, and Special Topics.  The "Special Topics" option is of particular interest in that it provides citation analyses and commentary for selected scientific research areas of recent notable advances.  Faculty may find it of use as it provides citation rankings for scientists, institutions, nations, and journals (i.e., Top Papers, Top Authors, Top Institutions, Top Journals, etc.,).

Click to get into ISI Web of Knowledge.

New Features Added to PubMed

Three new features have been added to PubMed :

  • Last author has been added to the "Sort By" menu in the results list and to the Single Citation Matcher.

  • Transliterated/vernacular title search added.

  • New status tag for PubMed citations. The new status tag, [PubMed - author manuscript in PMC], involves those articles that are available in PubMed Central (PMC) but are not normally indexed by PubMed. These articles are retrievable by doing the following search "pubstatusnihms [sb]"
