Books in PZ1-PZ4 Being Reclassed

General collection books in PZ1, PZ3 and PZ4 (subclasses used by the Library of Congress prior to 1980) are being reclassified to the appropriate subclasses of literature. This will bring works together in PQ, PR, PS, etc. that were previously shelved in different places. For example, Roald Dahl’s Kiss, Kiss has gone from PZ3.D1374Ki to PR6054.A35 K57 1960 along with the rest of the books we have by that author. The project to re-mark and re-shelve the PZs has already started and will take most of the summer.

Updated: Blackwell journals currently unavailable

As of today, Blackwell journal content is hosted solely on Wiley InterScience. However, University Library subscriptions to Blackwell titles are not recognized by Wiley InterScience. Therefore, titles formerly available via Blackwell Synergy are currently unavailable. We are working with Wiley to correct this problem as quickly as possible.
Update 7/2/2008: The problems with access to Blackwell titles on Wiley InterScience continue. Although some subscribed content is now available, current issues (from the latest 12 months in most cases) remain inaccessible. We are continuing to work with Wiley to correct this problem as quickly as possible.
Update 7/3/2008: Wiley appears to have restored access to our Blackwell titles. However, two problems remain: 1) Find it @ GSU links for former Blackwell Synergy titles still resolve to the Wiley InterScience homepage, rather than the journal's page. Wiley hopes to have this problem corrected soon. 2) Some individual articles are still unavailable. A list of title missing individual articles is here. Wiley states that these will be fixed by "mid-July."

Recipients Chosen for Carolyn L. Robison Award and Merl E. Reed Fellowships

Congratulations to the recipient of the Carolyn L. Robison Library Award, Malia Cargile, and Merl E. Reed Fellows in Southern Labor History, Lisa Gayle Hazirjian and Benjamin Houston.

Spring 2008 Carolyn L. Robison Library Award

Malia Cargile was recently named the spring 2008 recipient of the Carolyn L. Robison Library Award. Malia's 14 years of service at Georgia State have represented the educational values and high professional standards of Dr. Robison during her years of service at the University Library. Malia is a Library Assistant II for Library Media and Reserves and is currently pursuing a Master of Library and Information Science at Valdosta State University. Her supervisor, Denise Dimsdale, remarks that "she diligently completes her job duties and is interested in expanding her knowledge of libraries in order to better serve our patrons." Malia aspires to become a reference librarian in the future.

The Robison Library Award was established in honor of Dr. Carolyn L. Robison upon her retirement after a 31 year career at Georgia State University Library. The fund also strives to promote Dr. Robison's long term interest in encouraging the development of library staff members. This award provides financial assistance to a staff member of the University Library or the College of Law Library who is pursuing further education for a career in libraries. All of us at the Library are most grateful of the steadfast generosity of Dr. Robison.

2008 Merl E. Reed Fellowship in Southern Labor History

Two recipients were recently selected to receive the Merl E. Reed Fellowship in Southern Labor History award: Lisa Gayle Hazirjian for her work on "The Legend of Operation Dixie and the Long Labor Movement in Eastern North Carolina" and Benjamin Houston for his work on "The Nashville Way: A Southern City and Racial Change, 1945-1975." Each of these projects will require substantial research using the collections in the Southern Labor Archives. This year's winners were chosen by a review committee composed of Ian Fletcher (History Department, Georgia State University), Robert Woodrum (History Department, Clark Atlanta University), Traci Drummond (Archivist, Southern Labor Archives, Georgia State University Library), and Stephen Zietz (Head, Special Collections and Archives, Georgia State University Library).

The Merl E. Reed Fellowship in Southern Labor History was established in 2000 to honor Dr. Merl Reed, professor, scholar and founder of the archives, for his many contributions to education and labor history. A fellowship of $250-$500 is awarded annually to individuals whose research in the Southern Labor Archives will lead to a book, article, dissertation, or other substantive product. In return, recipients will make a presentation about their research to the Georgia State University community within one academic year after receiving the award. Faculty members, graduate students, upper-level undergraduates, and recognized independent scholars and artists are encouraged to apply.

To be considered for the 2009 Merl E. Reed Fellowship in Southern Labor History, applicants should submit on or before November 30, 2008.

Dr. Nancy H. Seamans appointed as new Dean of Libraries

Following a national search, Provost Ron Henry has named Nancy H. Seamans as Dean of Libraries effective August 4, 2008. Dr. Seamans is currently an Associate University Librarian and Director of Research and Instructional Services at the University of Iowa. She holds a Doctorate in Instructional Technology from Virginia Tech and a Master of Science in Library Science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Dr. Seamans is a practical and visionary leader who will be instrumental in creating and implementing further growth and prominence in the University Library. The search committee was meticulous and deliberate in their process to select a Dean who has an excellent understanding of the increasingly global and interdisciplinary academic environment. The University Library has made important advances under Charlene Hurt's leadership as Dean, and it is felt that Nan Seamans will be a Dean of vision to take the Library into the future. Dr. Seamans has served in her present capacity at the University of Iowa since 2005. She was previously Interim Director of the Hardin Library for the Health Sciences at the University of Iowa and prior to that, Director of the Instruction and Reference Department of University Libraries at Virginia Tech. She has been active in both the Iowa and Virginia Library Associations and is a long-time member of the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL), a division of the American Library Association (ALA).
Dean Hurt, who announced her plans to retire last fall, is pleased with the selection committee's decision, stating, "I'm very happy for the library and hope it continues to grow to serve the needs of the university faculty, students and staff."
