W. J. Usery, Jr.
describes joining the International Association of Machinists in
1952, Oral
history interview with Les Hough, July 28, 1987 [Usery Oral
History / Tape 10].
"I signed my card and by signing my card I gave a lot of other people the guts to sign theirs
you understand …And then we had a lot of skilled people who had been members of
unions before, you know, craft people, and IAM is an AF of L union
it's not as you ... you could even overcome that thinking that
people said the CIO was commie and red and all the other things they
were saying about the CIO at that time… So, we filed, the Machinists filed a petition for a bargaining unit of maintenance employees to
carve out a unit."
