About the Library Transformation Project

What is the Transformation Project?

The Georgia State University Library Transformation is a comprehensive renovation of two library buildings at the very heart of campus. The project will provide easier access to more resources, the newest technology and improved services, a variety of study spaces, and an information commons and learning commons.

The Library Transformation’s anticipated completion date is October 2007. The schedule on the left provides a timeline for the work. Please consult this schedule to find out what’s transforming when and follow our progress. In addition, you may want to peruse updates and photos of the transformation as it occurs.

What will be transformed?

Library North 1 and 2 will become the Information and Learning Commons. The Information Commons, on the 1st floor, will provide a quick stop location for patrons to use computers, glance at current periodicals, attend an instruction session, peruse special exhibits, and check out books. The Learning Commons, on the 2nd floor, is where patrons will access the reference collection, computers, expert research, technology, writing, and ESL assistance, and group study spaces.

The upper three floors of Library North will house the General Collection A-PZ and R-Z, as well as bound periodicals. Each floor will also feature a variety of study environments, including group study rooms. Library South 5 now features a quiet study room accommodating up to 50 users.

A new, wide link will connect the second floors of Library North and Library South, unifying the two buildings. The Learning Commons will spread across the link, which will provide a light-filled area of lounge, computer, and group study seating. Library South 2, home to Media Services, and the media collection will be updated, and two "group media rooms" will be available for use for watching videos or DVDs, listening to music, or practicing presentations.

In addition to the new link connecting the second floor of each building, the existing links on the 3rd, 4th and 5th floors will be expanded and equipped with group study space.

The library has selected a wide variety of furnishings to support the needs of its patrons. The furniture was selected for comfort, durability and aesthetic appeal.

This project has generated excitement in the university community. Find out what people on campus are saying, including the Dean of Libraries, Charlene Hurt about this project.

This project is funded in large part by a student fee passed by the Student Government Association in (date). However, there are many giving opportunities for those who wish to support the library’s transformation and ongoing operations.
